Today’s panel from OXYGEN book 2. Currently up to page 16 with this issue. The detail in this scene is slowing me down a bit. slowing Major T down as well. But we will struggle on. I also have 13 pages of colour from the colourist too so I can start dropping on some lettering. As is the way with my books, I have an idea of what those words will be but it’s not until I see all the pictures lined up that I actually write the narrative. More soon.
I recently had a request to do a cover recreation of one of my X-Men covers from 1992! I hadn’t done one before but time allowed so I thought I would give it a go. Once I had it all prepped it was like stepping back nearly 30 years! Inky McInk ink. Messy old stuff but lovely and a lot of fun. 🙂
The first review of episode one, RED, of OXYGEN is in. Really great to see that it is hitting the spot. It has been a long journey to get the first issue out but it has certainly achieved what I wanted it too. Many thanks to Darryll Robinson and all at MONKEYS fighting ROBOTS for the kind words 🙂
One of the things I always love drawing is landscapes and environments. Creating the world where characters play out their story. Here is another panel from OXYGEN. Echoes if Horizon on this one. Which of course is totally deliberate

It has been a long journey to get to this point and a lot of hard thinking, writing, and drawing. As was the case with HORIZON, this seven-part series takes the reader on a journey with a character that will not only grip but with all its hidden clues it will also enable insights for the reader. After the reception that HORIZON had I now know that this narrative technique works and it is something that I will be expanding on in future projects.

It has been a while since anything has happened with the OXYGEN project. Occasionally I would get a chance to draw another panel but it wasn’t enough to be able to realistically make significant progress with the book to reach a point where it would ever be published. Then something changed.
The Lockdown that has occurred for us all created a silver lining. I had to decamp from studio to home with minimal equipment. One desktop computer and my Cintiq (drawing tablet). Most of my work is as a storyboard artist. I was busy drawing ‘Dennis&Gnasher’ using my storyboard software when it suddenly occurred to me that I could draw panels for OXYGEN that way. I did a test and the results were amazing. Within two weeks I completed all the panels for the first chapter!
This is really satisfying and has lit a huge fire under the project. Colouring is in progress and I am already starting to thumbnail the second chapter. I have also restarted the Patreon page I had for it and am uploading news and short videos of me talking about the project. Please check it out.
